These new approaches on how to conduct and operate our businesses are very much in line with companies’ needs for increased efficiency, whilst also contributing to environmental sustainability over time. In summary, we are using less physical travel and increased digital tools to communicate and deliver service. It is most likely that the changes would have taken place anyway, but the ongoing pandemic is accelerating the process. One immediate effect on the security industry is the postponement of all the security exhibitions that were planned to take place from March to May. The most important event in the USA, ISC West in Las Vegas, originally scheduled for the 17th to 20th of March, is now re-scheduled to take place on the 20th to the 22nd of July. Another postponed security exhibition in the international heavyweight division is Ifsec in London. It was scheduled for mid-May but has moved on to the 8th to10th of September. Its toughest UK competitor – The Security Event in Birmingham – will be held less than two weeks later, from the 22nd to the 23rd of September. Add to this that Europe’s biggest security exhibition and Ifsec´s major competitor on the international market – Security Essen – also starts on the 22nd of September to be finished by the 25th of September. It is hard to see a winner resulting from this clash. The Security Event, with its more local UK profile, will probably lose less than the two competing international dinosaurs. Receiving a decent number of international visitors will be tough, even for Security Essen, the only of the three exhibitions that is due to be held on its original dates. The decline in popularity among exhibitors for both Ifsec and Security Essen will be even worse. Whether ISC West takes place in July remains to be seen. However, this exhibition will probably survive better than its European competitors. The event´s importance for the whole US-market is undisputed and the location of the show, Las Vegas, with its attractions and hotels nearby the exhibition venue make it a perfect place for exhibitors and visitors alike. Add to this that ISC West has not experienced a declining interest among exhibitors and visitors in recent years. And, the event is still backed up by most of the important manufacturers in the security technology market. Meanwhile Ifsec in London and Security Essen are threatened by a declining interest for exhibiting from major international players. Their claim of being the international leaders among security events in Europe does not help any more. A targeted aim for time efficiency and environmental sustainability by many companies has already affected these events. The old saying “all business is local” is ever more relevant today in most European countries, where security exhibitions are organised locally on a yearly basis. The local shows – combined with online information sources – are sufficient enough to keep people updated about what’s going on in the security industry. Furthermore, these alternatives save time, money and better serve the demand for environmental sustainability. Now, the corona crisis will not just affect the exhibition sector. Organisations and individuals have been forced to work differently and to use digital solutions to communicate more than ever before. This practice will probably also boost the development towards a generally higher degree of digitalisation in the security industry when the Covid-19 pandemic is over, and could even speed up the implementation of Security as a Service (SaaS), which is about time. Securitas, the world’s second biggest security company, claims they are “leading the transformation of the global security industry”. Their security solutions and electronic security sales for 2018 represented just 20 percent (20 billion SEK) of the company´s total sales. This shows how far behind the physical security industry still is, but also shows the potential for growth as we are entering the era of digitalisation and technologybased services..
