Beyond access – the top 3 trends in access control
Leveraging an access control system can provide improved compliance and efficiency as well as increased understanding of the built environment. There are 3 trends that can take organisations beyond today’s access control, according to Derek Arcuri, Team Lead, Industry and App Marketing at Genetec.
These are the three trends: 1) Increasing threats to network cybersecurity Threats to network security are increasing. An access control system can have vulnerabilities anywhere from the server to the reader and credentials. The challenge is to protect a system today and in the future. At Genetec, we work with partners to ensure that our customers have the best tools for maintaining cybersecurity. These include more secure credentials, TLS protocol, and secure measures for client workstations and servers. 2) Greater emphasis on improving efficiency, safety, and compliance Automation is a great way for organisations to achieve their goals of improved efficiency, safety, and compliance. When it comes to maintaining all the components of an access control system, keeping elements up to date can be challenging and time-consuming. With Security Center, organisations can bundle and manage updates directly in the configuration tool. The relationship between safety and compliance is clear. Regulatory bodies set maximum occupancy thresholds for everything from elevators to conference rooms. But enforcing compliance is not easy. By automating these rules within an access control system and counting people as they enter an area, organisations can take control of compliance and ensure safety within their environments. 3) Improved understanding of the security environment When an organisation, like a hospital, upgrades its facilities, decisions are often based on site surveys. While these provide qualitative data, working with quantitative data, particularly in relation to patient flow and accessibility, can lead to better design. This same principle will also be important as organisations move towards a mobile workforce. While this can lead to increased collaboration and reduced budget costs, realestate planning for such a workforce presents a new set of challenges. Where once the majority of employees had regular, predictable schedules, this will no longer be the case. How will organisations prepare for this? The ability to pull and consolidate access control data from multiple systems is crucial for making informed decisions about space allocation. When organisations can visualise their data in easy-to-run reports in Security Center, they get a clear understanding of their environment, enabling them to better plan for the future.
